Bua Loi (Rice Balls in Sweet Coconut Milk)
Bua loi is a traditional Thai rice flour dessert. It is often prepared for religious or ritual ceremonies, but it can also be eaten as an everyday dish. Bua loi are often brightly colored with various ingredients (see notes).
Ingredients
- sweet glutinous rice flour, sweet2 cup
- steamed and mashed taro root, steamed and mashed1 cup
- water1/4 cup
- Coconut milk
Quantities are auto-calculated from the original recipe as a guide. Items without numbers (e.g. “to taste”) are not changed.
Method 5 steps
Combine rice flour, mashed taro, and water to make a dough.
Shape the dough into small balls, using additional rice flour to prevent sticking.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the dough balls to the boiling water. They will initially sink but will gradually float to the surface as they cook.
Remove the cooked bua loi from the pot, and drain the water.
Transfer the bua loi to a dish, and serve with coconut milk. This dish is best served hot.
